Assessment 1

Initial concept sketches:

Although a keen musician, Lachlan’s career has revolved around the insurance industry, working from a junior in a niche firm to now leading a portfolio in a large, bespoke agency.

Initial thoughts explored the notion of representing his career through a ‘building’ of the letter “L”, exploring what would happen when a music note was modified to look like an “L” or using the layout of Lachlan’s primary instrument – the keyboard. This third option offered the most promise due to the ability to use the dials and buttons of a Roland keyboard to hold information about his career.

initial concepts

Chosen concept exploration:

To create a more interesting visual, rather than create a literal representation (left) I have decided to explore a more abstract layout (right), where it hints at the instrument – doing so offers greater flexibility in the layout of information as well as opportunity to create a more interesting outcome.

concept option 2

Chosen concept detail:

The dials and switches would reveal information about Lachlan’s professional capacity and capability, ie, using a volume slider to represent his portfolio size, or toggle switches to show his area of specialisation / focus.

Visually, I have also explored a more literal or abstract representation of these details. Initial review suggests a more abstract option will be the more successful.

Final concept sketch:

Sketch of the proposed layout. The keyboard will be used to show historical and current employment information, such as company and role detail. The tempo screen will show his date of birth, and the dials and sliders will represent aspects of his professional capacity (as detailed above).
